Live Lap-Band® Surgery

SOURCE: OR-Live, Inc.
11:40AM, September 4, 2008

Halifax Health will present a live online bariatric surgery on Monday, September 22 at 7 pm. Joel Sebastien, MD, FACS, a surgeon with East Coast Bariatrics, will perform a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, better known as a Lap-Band® surgery, while Harry Black, MD, FACS, answers audience questions.

Dr. Sebastien is board certified and specializes in the surgical treatment of obesity. He has performed more than 200 laparoscopic bariatric operations.

"This surgery is simply used as a tool in the weight loss process for morbidly obese patients," said Dr. Sebastien. "Our team of professionals will help these patients learn how to use this tool, in conjunction with certain lifestyle changes, for long term success."

During a Lap-Band procedure, surgeons use small incisions and long-shafted instruments to implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient's abdomen. The band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. It also creates a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and the intestines. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food. In turn, this results in weight loss.
